Background
Rumiko was born in Freesia, a small country with an emphasis on magic, alchemy, and class structures. Those without any magical aptitude were oppressed, as were the poor. Born into a family of powerful mages with great political influence, Rumiko was raised to agree with this logic. While she was a kind girl at heart, she internalized this, especially due to her childhood. Her mother was a a foreign courtesan, not her father's wife, and her relatives looked down on her. Her older half-brother, Matthew, was promoted to a high ranking position in the military when he was only 20. Rumiko was jealous despite her brother being kind to her, and swore to surpass him no matter what.

Then the war came. Polzin, a much larger country, invaded. Rumiko went to serve under her brother as soon as she was 16. As the war dragged on, a rebellion of the lower class began. Matthew sent Rumiko to suppress it. Her and the rebels fought a few battles without any decisive victories. However, Rumiko was very cold and abusive to her troops, and they soon turned against her, some abandoning her and some turning against her. A general from the rebellion, Lance, saved her from being executed by her own troops. Seeing the lower class as human for the first time, Rumiko surrendered. Lance spoke to her often, and eventually she had a change of heart. She officially joined the rebels towards the end of the war and helped overthrow Freesia's government.

Rumiko had lost her family, including Matthew, in the war. With nothing tying her down, she left with Lance to travel the world. During this time, they had a child, a girl named Mina. Lance wanted to travel more, but Rumiko wanted to settle down. The two separated on good terms, with an agreement that Lance would visit at least once a year so that Mina could see her father. Rumiko started an alchemy shop in the country of Gilden, and as an emotional outlet, started writing novels. Adventure stories at first, but then she turned to romance, where she was successful. During this time, she met and had flings with a few other men, as well as some women, using this as inspiration for her writing. Her novels eventually became more profitable than her alchemy.

She had two more children, as well - another girl named Aoi, and a boy named Ryo. She was successful enough to support three children on her own comfortably. A few years after Ryo was born, she met a fifteen-year-old girl named Shoshannah. Shoshannah was an aspiring alchemist and noble from the faraway country of Cristo, who'd traveled all the way to Gilden because she'd heard there was a talented alchemist there. Seeing her younger self in her, Rumiko took her in as a student, which is what is currently occupying most of her time. That, and teasing Mina and Shoshannah about 'how well they get along.' She does a lot of that.

Personality
At face value, Rumiko is a very impressive woman. A single mother with three happy children, a successful novelist, a skilled alchemist and mage. And while these are all very true, Rumiko still bears the weight of her younger years, beneath the surface. She doesn't have a high opinion of herself, and this manifests outwards as teasing and self-deprecating humor. She never fully outgrew the urge to get under people's skin as a way of proving that she cares. While she's very careful to not go too far with it, especially where children are concerned, she still slips into those patterns of behavior often. She cares for the people around her, quite deeply, and wants to see them do well, but she has difficulty expressing it for fear they'll find it overbearing or unwanted. Due to this, she often plays the prodding role in conversations and personal interactions, poking at a person to try and figure out why they act the way they do, rather than just asking.

However, she's never cruel, and more than anything she's a calm, even-mannered person. Her flaws exist, but even she's aware of them, and works at trying to keep control of her worst habits. Of course, it's easy for her to slip, especially with the stress of her life. Raising three children on her own wasn't a financial strain on Rumiko, between inheriting her family's money and her success as a novelist, but it still put an emotional strain on her. Something that doesn't help this is her tendency to be something of a helicopter mom - she's a worrier, and wants to make sure the people she loves are doing well. So she tends to invite herself into the problems of people she cares about without prompting. She doesn't want to see people, especially young ones, make the same mistakes she did, and she's quick to dispense advice, even if it wasn't asked for.

This is Rumiko's biggest flaw, even more than her teasing - she's a busybody. This even ties back into her teasing. Teasing is a good way to figure out what someone is like, and once she knows what someone is like she can try and help them.

It is worth noting that Rumiko is actually very good at this sort of thing, at least in her own experience. She has a good ability to look at things objectively, and due to how self-critical she is she's quite good at noticing areas other people could improve at, as well. And as the mother of three children, she has plenty of experience with coaxing people through their worries and anxieties. She's an intelligent, motherly soul - she just sometimes oversteps her bounds. If someone told her to stop, she would immediately... though she'd worry even more, once she was by herself.

With people closer to her own age, she tends to default to teasing, flirting, or both. She's confident in her looks and charm, and finds the back and forth of flirtation exciting. But even if she's successful, these flings never tend to last long.

As a result of both her behavior and her experiences, she's a very lonely person, deep down. She worries over the day her children will eventually move out on their own, and she has trouble engaging with other adults beyond flirting. She tends to channel this loneliness into her novels, with most of her work consisting of tales of love and loss. It's an important outlet for her, and it's rare that finds herself with any sort of writer's block.

At the end of the day, Rumiko is still a very intelligent, even-mannered woman. She's responsible, eager to help, charming and quick-witted. She knows her children use her as a role model, and she wants to do right by them. But she has wounds she's never fully processed, and a bad habit of focusing on others instead of herself. While she's aware of her own flaws, she has a difficult time examining the root cause of the issues. Not because of an inability to, but lack of a want to. Leaving Freesia behind was also about leaving that pain behind, and she doesn't want to admit she's been carrying it with her all these years. She's never told her children about her past, and when Shoshannah found out about it, she urged her not to tell them.

She's a sweet, caring mother, but the role's a little forced. The truth is, she's guilty, and doesn't know what to do about it.

Powers

Magic: Rumiko's natural affinity is with electricity, so most of her spells have to do with that. Magic in Rumiko's setting is more soul-based than anything else. A person's natural affinity has to do with their own inherent nature, and is executed by channeling their own lifeforce and essence. Due to this, anything beyond basic magic is physically exhausting if performed for too long, and the most powerful spells carry a large risk of death. Often, trinkets and familiars are used to share some of the burden, channeling from their essence in addition to the mage's own. Magic can also be used by channeling another person's essence, but it requires the consent of the person being drawn from, and it could easily kill them if the person is untrained in magic.

In terms of what Rumiko can actually do with her magic: She can channel electricity through her fingers. At a basic level, she can rather easily generate a shock strong enough to slightly burn a person. With some focus, she could easily knock a person unconscious. An amount that would be fatal to a human would be exhausting for her, but fully possible. She can also fire it from her fingertips or channel it into objects she's focused on, but this is much more difficult and reduces the amount of energy she can create - firing a voltage that would be fatal to a human would be enough to make her pass out. She's also very rusty with combat magic, so it'd be even more taxing on her.

Alchemy: In Rumiko's setting, alchemy is a combination of magic and chemistry - generally, ingredients need to be dissolved in a boiling pot, stirred together, allowed to cool, then heated to rebind them, forging their 'core essences' together. It can also be done by placing ingredients on top of a specially prepared magic sigil drawn on the ground. Alchemic recipes are founded on combining the 'essences' in a way that makes logical sense. This is mostly down to basic chemistry, and what things are made of.
